Overview of the History of Generative Syntax
1. Background and outline Scientific grammar goes back to the Middle Ages, and specifically the study, by Modistic philosophers, of language as a phenomenon independent of thought. In a sense, the tradition is even older, dating back to Classical Antiquity, and spanning several cultures – after all, every traditional writing system presupposes some serious linguistic theorizing. In the humanist...
متن کاملTowards a generative syntax of tonal harmony
This paper aims to propose a hierarchical, generative account of diatonic harmonic progressions and suggest a set of phrase-structure grammar rules. It argues that the structure of harmonic progressions exceeds the simplicity of the Markovian transition tables and proposes a set of rules to account for harmonic progressions with respect to key structure, functional and scale degree features as ...

متن کاملNatural Language Syntax Description using Generative Dependency Grammar
Language Processing is a growing field in computer science and engineering, related to both theoretical and applied computational techniques relative to natural language and the use of language knowledge. This issue of the research journal " Polibits " presents four contributions concerning natural language processing. Two of them draw formal models of two categories of knowledge of language: s...
متن کامل“Model Theoretic Syntax is not Generative Enumerative Syntax with constraints”: under what condition?
The generative conception of grammars relies on the derivation process which, to its turn, depends on a hierarchical representation of syntax. We show in this paper how a fully constraint-based approach, avoiding such restriction, can constitute an alternative to generativity and form the basis of a framework for a model-theoretic conception of grammar.
